The website was developed to support the anti-996 movement, which is boycotting the trend led by tech companies to adopt a new work scheme that demands 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. workdays, six days per week. 996.ICU was firstly promoted on GitHub, where almost 90% of the developers in China come together and has not yet been banned by the Great Firewall. However, considering the lack of appeal GitHub possesses compared to other mainstream social media platforms and a relatively higher user participation threshold, it didn’t make as loud noise as expected.
