China’s cyber watchdogs now see browsers as an outlet of clickbait as well as misinformation, and they are taking actions accordingly. Leaders in the field including Tencent’s QQ, Qihoo’s 360 and Alibaba-backed UC are mandated to purge content released from unofficial media sources that misrepresent policies or spread rumours, and take down articles and graphics which are vulgar and gossipy. Browsers on phones provided by Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo are not excluded in this campaign.
