Since Jan. 3rd, the cleanup campaign to remove vulgar and low-brow content on the Chinese internet and thus to build a healthy cyber environment has seen around 9,300 mobile applications forced from app stores and 700 websites shut down. Chinese internet giants stand out for undergoing the most severe scrutiny and the greatest overhaul. The news aggregator Tian Tian Kuai Bao, which is backed by Tencent, was singled out for spreading harmful information while ByteDance, whose video services are found frequently installed on Chinese phones, are experiencing restrictive content surveillance.
