Creative advertising by Daigou to work around strict e-commerce regulations
After the stringent restriction against tax-evasion enforced by the lately issued e-commerce law, Daigous, also known as cross-border personal shoppers in English, have come up with hilarious ideas to bypass the content censor. By posting “New Arrivals” updates on WeChat Moment with stylised pictures of products instead of actual photos, along with homophonic characters, sometimes even English words, to replace the real names, they were satirically referred to as “always agile when facing the escalating tension pressured by the government”. In a summary post illustrating their work-arounds, people were found laughing about a luggage case-like hand drawing Estee Lauder’s serum, and pictures of avocados which suggests Kiehl’s avocado eye cream.
