The latest promotion video posted on D&G’s Weibo page, featuring a Chinese lady eating a pizza, cannoli and spaghetti with chopsticks, was criticised on the Chinese social media for trivializing the country’s culture and depicting Chinese women in a racist way. The controversy intensified after the brand’s co-founder Stefano Gabbana was later embroiled in an argument about the sensitivity of Chinese people, calling them names in what appeared to be a private Instagram conversation. Celebrities who had been billed to attend the catwalk show subsequently made withdrawal announcements. Pressed by the negative public opinion, D&G canceled the planned show that night.
