One of the most popular WeChats account was forced to shut down
Affected by the enforcement of stringent regulations against fake news feeds applied to the content market, probably the most popular self-media influencer, Mimeng, reportedly closed her WeChat public account. Proficient in clickbait titles and falsified articles, among other manipulative strategies, Mimeng claims to have had 10 million followers. Her writing was long criticized for distorting facts and the profit-driven business pattern has indirectly boosted the market KOL price. The first backlash it received dates back to 2017 when the post “A Brief History of Prostitution” sparked huge public controversial. Phoenix News’ statement claimed that Mimeng threatened “social stability,” while Toutiao encouraged content creators to “promote socialist core values.”
