To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Tencent’s enduring instant messenger, QQ launched its new membership package, called “big VIPs”, which allows users to enjoy 8 exclusive rights on the platform including online monthly subscription discounts and a bonus scheme. The new program is labeled RMB35. Confronting direct competition from the sister app WeChat, QQ has grown into a platform especially favored by young users, mostly aged under 22. Encouraged by the strengthening purchasing power among students, QQ’s financial outlook is even rosier than that of its dominating era before WeChat came along.
