Red envelopes and ads banned in WeChat groups for children
A slew of stringent rules published by Beijing’s Municipal Education Commission in an aim to eliminate inappropriate and harmful ads circulating among primary and middle school students WeChat groups are welcomed and embraced by parents and teachers. Red envelopes, or lucky money, is also forbidden in order to protect pupils from transactions with potential illegal purposes and maybe something even worse, gambling. Students’ privacy and pride will be properly protected since talks about academic grades and school-related topics shall not be publicly discussed. The move is seen as yet another response following calls by Chinese President Xi Jinping to create a “clean and righteous cyberspace.”
