The enactment of the regulation in Shanghai demanding household waste to be sorted and recycled illustrates an unexpected but hilarious image. Being confused about the correct criteria on which to base classification of rubbish into recyclable, hazardous, wet, and dry, the “frustrating” residents in Shanghai have made plenty of self-deprecating jokes with regards to their bewilderment, especially when they were questioned by “bin guards” (supervisors assigned by local authorities who are in the position of checking rubbish), for example, ‘what kind of waste is there in your bin bag?’ can also be interpreted in Chinese as ‘what kind of waste are you?’
