Tencent is more a Reddit investor than a controller
The series D funding round led by $150 million from Tencent to Reddit has certainly sparked huge debates on whether the cash influx will provoke China-style censorship to be imposed on the free-speaking platform, is seriously discussed among foreigners within China. However, today’s recommendation introduces a point of view which should help reduce public anxiety – Tencent can be of great help to the maintenance and further expansion of Reddit with little, possibly none, impairment to Reddit’s legacy “anything goes content” model. In contrast to social media titans such as Facebook and Instagram, Reddit has always been humble to cash in its tremendous traffic, and in a continuous search for funding support.
