Despite holding the record of being the most inexpensive system among world-class cities, Beijing’s public transport utilization rate, reportedly 50%, is far lower than its peers (Tokyo’s 80% and 90% in Hong Kong). The fact is mostly attributed to the sharp segmentation between workplaces and inhabited areas which resulted in a lengthy commute for millions of office workers of 56 minutes for 13.2km on average. The lack of underground stations among densely populated areas and limited service hours may also contribute.
