Tencent’s messaging app WeChat has halted its service in India, in compliance with the ban mandated by the Indian government. Users registered with Indian phone numbers are totally blocked out while others have limited access with VPNs (virtual private networks). Dominated by Whatsapp, India is not WeChat’s targeted region with an estimated 6 to 8 million users, whereas the cut-off exacerbates the inconvenience to Chinese people who live there to communicate with their homeland.
