Amid the escalating scrutiny from the Chinese government and the advocacy for a benign social networking environment, Weibo responded with a combat confronting “water army”, which refers to paid users who contribute to fake likes and reposts in an attempt to polish feeds’ popularity. The new rule will not anymore specify the figures of interactions countings, such as likes and shares, if the numbers surpassed 1 million, instead, showing 1 million+ in an ambiguous way. This is believed by Weibo to be an effected method of curbing rampant and infamous data fraud within the platform.
